Data and formulas

The calculators use published data and textbook formulas, typed into our own code (no third-party tables or libraries are copied):

  • Lens shade numbers: minimum shades from OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133(a)(5); suggested shades are the ANSI/AWS recommendations printed in OSHA fact sheet FS-3499 (US government works, public domain).
  • Copper resistance: the AWG diameter definition and the IACS resistivity of annealed copper.
  • Electrode classifications: the AWS A5.1 / A5.5 designation system.
  • Welding symbols: drawn by us following the layout of AWS A2.4.
  • Heat input efficiency factors: ISO/TR 18491 values as published by TWI and Weld Australia; carbon equivalents: IIW, Ito–Bessyo (Pcm) and EN 1011-2 (CET) formulas.
  • Fillet weld allowable stresses: the 0.30 × FEXX (ASD) and 0.75 × 0.60 × FEXX (LRFD) rules of AWS D1.1 / AISC.
  • Melting points of pure metals: standard reference values.
